A Guide to Glove Types for Critical Environments
In facilities where safety and contaminant control are crucial, using the right type of glove will provide the appropriate levels of protection and performance. From cleanroom gloves to gloves used for handling hazardous materials, the glove type used is most often influenced by the type of work being done. The following is a review of some of the most common types of gloves used in critical environment applications.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) gloves
PVC has a stiff composition that is softened with the addition of plasticizers. Offering excellent protective qualities against dirt and other contaminants, it’s often one of several types of gloves used in cleanroom environments.
Latex gloves—
As a naturally-based rubber, latex offers flexibility and easily conforms over the hands. Latex gloves are generally used in activities that require precise control of fingers and hands, like surgical procedures and other laboratory-based operations.
Neoprene gloves—
Neoprene has good chemical resistance as a synthetically-based rubber and is often worn during chemically-based processes in laboratories. Because they’re chemically resistant, they also offer decent protection against substances like animal allergens and are good choices when handling live animals or for work in laboratories that study animal tissues.
Nitrile gloves—
Also used in applications like cleanrooms, nitrile gloves are made from a copolymer material that has differing degrees of propane nitrile in it. This material offers chemical resistance and can be stiff, depending on the amounts present. Generally, the higher the levels of propane nitrile, the more chemically resistant and stiff the gloves will be.
Polyurethane gloves—
Gloves treated with this anti-abrasion material feature a protective layering over the fabric that makes them suitable for use as PPE (personal protective equipment) in a variety of applications.
In addition to the actual composition and type of glove, another factor to consider when choosing gloves for an application include the quality of the glove, which can influence its durability. If the gloves are going to be used for prolonged periods of time, lower quality gloves may be more prone to unnecessary deterioration or breakdown.
